Apple has officially introduced OpenAI’s ChatGPT into its ecosystem with iOS 18.2, enabling you to access ChatGPT directly on your iPhone, even without installing a dedicated app. Additionally, when paired with Apple Intelligence, this integration lets you generate text or images and gain insights about objects and locations around you through Visual Intelligence. Here’s all you need to know about using ChatGPT on an iPhone running iOS 18.2 or later.
Which iPhones support ChatGPT-Siri integration?
While many would be cheering at the mention of this ChatGPT-Siri integration, not all iPhones can support this feature. Currently, this feature can be availed only in phones operating with Apple Intelligence—notably, iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max, iPhone 16, 16 Plus, 16 Pro, and 16 Pro Max.
That means the feature of Visual Intelligence won’t be available to iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max users. This is because Visual Intelligence requires a physical Camera Control button, which is currently only available on the iPhone 16 lineup.
Moreover, to use the ChatGPT extension on supported devices, users must be at least 13 years old or meet the minimum age requirement in their region for ChatGPT. For more information on eligibility, consult OpenAI’s Terms of Use.
How to set up ChatGPT in iOS 18.2
Before using the ChatGPT extension on your iPhone, you need to enable it. Here’s how:
- Go to Settings and choose Apple Intelligence & Siri.
- Tap on ChatGPT under the Extensions section.
- Select Set Up next to Use ChatGPT.

4. Press Next on the ChatGPT information screen, then tap Enable ChatGPT.

5. Alternatively, select Use ChatGPT with an Account and sign in to your ChatGPT account to access advanced features and allow your iPhone to save a history of your previous requests.
If you skipped linking your ChatGPT account during the initial setup, you can easily do it later by following these steps:
- Open Settings and navigate to Apple Intelligence & Siri, then tap on ChatGPT.
- Select Sign in under the ChatGPT Account section.
- Log in with your preferred account, and your ChatGPT account will appear under the ChatGPT Account section.

How to use ChatGPT on iPhone with iOS 18.2
Now that the ChatGPT extension is enabled on your iPhone, you can leverage the ChatGPT-Siri integration to draft text, explore subjects further with Visual Intelligence, or ask Siri to complete tasks using ChatGPT. Below, I’ve outlined each use case in more detail.
Use ChatGPT with Writing Tools
when Apple Intelligence Writing Tools debuted with iOS 18.1, the ability to compose text through input was initially unavailable. This was because the ChatGPT extension needed to be activated on your iPhone to generate text based on a description, a feature introduced with iOS 18.2.
Now that the full Writing Tools suite is available, you can use it to craft text with ChatGPT. Here’s how:
- Open the app where you want to access the Apple Intelligence Writing Tools. For this example, we’ll use the Notes app.
- In a new note, tap the text field, then press the > button in the contextual menu and select Writing Tools.
- Navigate to the Compose tab within the Writing Tools window.

- Enter your desired description in the input field, then press Send. You can ask ChatGPT to draft some text or create an image.

Wait a few moments, and ChatGPT will generate the requested text for you.
Use ChatGPT with Visual Intelligence
Visual Intelligence and the Camera Control button on the iPhone 16 lineup were among the most talked-about features at the launch event. Now that Visual Intelligence is available, you can use it on your iPhone 16 to find images similar to the subject in your camera frame or ask ChatGPT for more details about it. Here’s how:
- Point your iPhone camera at the subject and press and hold the Camera Control button to activate Visual Intelligence.
- Tap the Ask button in the bottom-left corner. You’ll see an Asking ChatGPT message as ChatGPT processes the information.
- Once processing is complete, a ChatGPT box will appear on your screen, displaying details about the subject in the frame.

Use ChatGPT with Siri
Using ChatGPT with Siri is as straightforward as simply making any ordinary request via Siri. The only difference is that Siri will prompt you to allow the use of ChatGPT in answering your query. This is how it works:
- Tap the Side button or say ‘Hey Siri’ and Siri to turn on Siri, then ask it to perform a task that you otherwise could do in ChatGPT.
- Alternatively, double tap the app switcher bar at the bottom of your screen to type your query directly to Siri.
- Once you make your request, Siri will ask if you want to proceed with ChatGPT. You then click on the Use ChatGPT option and see a message saying Working with ChatGPT followed by the result generated.

f you primarily rely on ChatGPT, you might find Siri’s confirmation step repetitive. While this extra step highlights Apple’s commitment to user privacy, you can disable it entirely. Here’s how:
- Open Settings, navigate to Apple Intelligence & Siri → ChatGPT.
- Tap ChatGPT under the Extension section and toggle off Confirm ChatGPT Request.

How to turn off ChatGPT on iPhone
While Apple prioritizes user privacy, some individuals might still feel uneasy about sharing their data with ChatGPT servers. If you share these concerns, you can disable ChatGPT on your iPhone entirely for added peace of mind. Here’s how to do it:
- Open Settings and navigate to Apple Intelligence & Siri.
- Scroll down and select ChatGPT under the Extensions section.
- Finally, toggle off Use ChatGPT to disable it.

If you can’t get logged into ChatGPT using an iPhone that’s running on iOS 18.2, there could be several reasons: some appear obvious, others less apparent. Here are some steps to troubleshoot and find out what’s wrong:
- First of all, check your internet connection. Make sure that your iPhone is on a stable mobile network. If your signal isn’t strong enough, you should switch to Wi-Fi and sign in again.
- Be patient: If signing in fails multiple times, then it might be an issue with the server of ChatGPT. Just wait for some time till they fix the problem from their end and then try again.
- Confirm your login credentials You probably entered an incorrect email address or password. Confirm your account details before attempting to log in again.
- Restart your phone. Sometimes, a software glitch or minor bug could be disrupting the sign-in process; thus, perhaps restarting your iPhone may solve the problem in several cases and allow for easy sign-in.
